What is BFD? How does it work?

In this post, we discuss what is BFD, why it’s used, how it can work.

What and Why BFD?

For Network devices (routers, switches, etc) that are not directly connected to each other, cannot detect failures that may occur on the path between them, Bi-directional forwarding detection – BFD can support network devices to rapidly detect remote failures at milliseconds interval by being bounded to network protocols to rapidly notify them about discovered failures to minimise packet drops.

On Huawei devices, BFD can be enabled for OSPF, BGP, RSVP, TE Tunnels, and even on physical interfaces to rapidly detect failures between devices.

See following video for more details about BFD, and how does it work to detect failures.
